The James P. Gillen Memorial Scholarship

Established by Daniel Gillen ’78 in 2002, this scholarship benefits students matriculating to SRU from Allegheny or Butler counties.

“I was a first generation college student, first time away from home, scared out of my mind, who saw an opportunity,” stated Dan Gillen. “My father never went to college, but of his four children, three of us went to Slippery Rock. My father quickly adopted the University and the University was a source of great pride to him. Slippery Rock was the foundation that enabled me to move forward to where I am today."

"I work for an organization, McDonald’s, which believes in giving back to the community in which they do business. That culture, that belief system, permeates the company…and for me, I wanted to give back to the place where I got my start-and that is Slippery Rock. The best way for my family to honor my father and to give back was to create an endowed scholarship at Slippery Rock University in memory of my father. So, now there is the James P. Gillen Scholarship at SRU.”

The Coach McElhaney Football Scholarship

Slippery Rock University did not play a football game for 14 years without Jim ‘Mac’ McElhaney. Beginning with the first day of those hot, summer pre-season training camps through the end of each season, Mac was there coaching the wide receivers and looking after the needs of any player needing help. That consistency ended just prior to the start of training camp for the 2003-2004 football season for The Rock with Mac’s unexpected death.

His wife, Bonnie, a 1963 SRU graduate, who had been with him and the team for each of those 154 games, has ensured that Mac’s ability to influence deserving Rock football players will continue forever through the Coach ‘Mac’ McElhaney Football Scholarship Endowment. The Coach McElhaney Football Scholarship annually supports a talented member of The Rock football team playing on the offensive side of the scrimmage line.

Head Coach George Mihalik stated, “I am grateful to Bonnie for this tremendous scholarship. It is a wonderful way to permanently recognize Mac’s outstanding values and ideals and his many amazing accomplishments. There is no question that through this scholarship Mac will forever be a positive influence on future Rock football players.”
